Welcome to this month’s edition of our featured maker. We’re incredibly excited to talk to Biancha Samuel-Reid, the founder of Hand of Gaia. We admire how she has combined her spiritual roots with her careful consideration for mother earth. Let’s find out more about her spiritual clothing for babies…
Tell us about the story behind Hand Of Gaia. How did it all start?
Hand Of Gaia was initially conceived during my pregnancy with Gaia. Having previously studied womenswear print, I was constantly looking for stylish, bold printed clothing that offered a different narrative for African inspired design, especially in the organic market.
After going through many challenges in my journey of self-discovery, I finally built up the courage to start creating again.
Hand Of Gaia was born out of a need to design what I felt me and Gaia needed during those early stages of Motherhood.
The elements of life is a beautiful part of your collection tell us what inspires you?
My biggest inspiration is, of course, my daughter Gaia, and why I’ve chosen to name the brand after her. Becoming a parent was a real transformational experience, and in many ways, felt as though I had birthed myself — a soul awakening of sorts. Much of my inspiration draws heavily from books, documentaries and my dream journals. This really informs the mood and choice of words I incorporate within the collection. I absolutely love researching and re-connecting with ancient African cultures and spiritual practices that are deeply rooted in communication, preservation and taking care of the earth.
Each design always starts off as a hand-drawn sketch, perhaps inspired by a keyword or concept. For me, it is incredibly important that each design contains a message, and I have a deep emotional connection to what I’m creating. It can sometimes take me weeks to fully realise a plan and my intentions for creating it. My making process is also layered and completed by hand, and I love the many possibilities and imperfections screen printing offers.
Let’s talk about your chosen Nurture Collective Icons why you chose them, and which ones mean the most to you?

What’s the vision for Hand of Gaia?
Hand Of Gaia is continually evolving, but my ultimate vision is to be that go to brand for the perfect thoughtful gift for Baby and Home. My focus is on continuing creating beautiful products that are centred on mindfulness and clothing that nurtures and celebrates the family.

Honestly, every piece! Every finished product is like my babies, and I only sell what I am deeply in love with and enjoyed creating. However, I am proud of “The Sun Feeds Us” Organic cotton Bodysuit because this represents a time when I started to draw again after a long period of creative block and releasing feelings inadequacy.
