We searched India for a manufacturing unit which would cover the entire process of growing organic cotton through to all the processes involved in the manufacture of our baby clothes. All these activities had to come under the auspices of fair trading practices for farmers and manufacturers alike. Thus all activities from farm gate to finished goods to customer should be covered within an ethical framework.
Kerala is a State of India which is uniquely diverse in animal and plant species which it is everyone’s duty to preserve. It is home to herds of endangered wild elephants and the remarkable top-of-the-food chain, tigers. We have extensive forests and native land being slowly eroded and depopulated of all sorts of amazing creatures and plants (no doubt some which have yet to be discovered and recorded!). With all this in mind we proceeded to search and were lucky enough to find the right organisation in South India, close to National Tiger reserves which fitted with our ideals. Using a young award winning Australian designer to design the garments and put all the technical design data together we began our venture.
To complement our range of natural organic cotton baby clothes we are now able to offer a very special range of toys and nursery accouterments for small children. These toys are the product of modern creative design harnessed to a unique and centuries-old Indian art form. The toys embody the spirit of childhood, being both quirky and playful. They appeal to child and adult alike. The toys’ smooth contours are delightful to hold, and their vibrant colours make them immediately attractive to children. Importantly, the toys fit our Nature’s Cloth ethic as they are made using safe vegetable dye colours fixed and polished with Lac (a natural product) and sustainable timber. As well as the range of toys, we are also able to offer some decorative nursery products which have the same unique appeal. They cannot but make one smile. The toys are made in small home-based industrial units in a small town in Southern India. The town’s toy industry is supported by the intellectual property right of “Geographical Indication” making it unique to the world under World Trade Organisation.
Historically, the craft came to India at the behest of Tipu Sultan, the Maharaja of Mysore, during the eighteenth century. Fascinated by the art form, he brought artisans from Persia to train local people in the craft, and so began the story of toy making in this district, which, despite competition from cheap plastic products, has survived to this day. Our particular supplier has worked tirelessly with crafts people, and especially he has trained many women into the craft, in order to provide sustainable incomes for them, and to ensure its survival. He is the inspiration of the new designs which we have chosen to include in the Nature’s Cloth range.
