This spinning top with a string is a step up from the smaller type of spinning toy spun between finger and thumb.

Whipping tops make ideal Eco birthday gifts and are the perfect green gift for Christmas. It’s the ideal challenge for an older child.

These traditional wooden toys are handcrafted from a solid piece of recycled local, Beechwood which makes them very tough. The stick is FSC certified Beech and the cord is vegan-friendly sustainable cork. They also have a metal stud fitted to help them spin for a really long time.

I remember going on holiday, aged 9, to the Isle of Arran on the West Coast of Scotland. Whilst there I bought a whipping top, or whip and peerie, as the Scots say. I was excited to see if I could make it work. It wasn’t easy and it took a couple of weeks to get the hang of it. The process of learning helped my coordination and taught me a lot about learning a new skill. The fact that I couldn’t do it straight away encouraged my curiosity and my tenacity. Plus, the pride I felt in myself when I could do it was that much greater. Not many toys offer these valuable lessons nowadays. That’s what makes traditional toys so great.

A Whipping Top Set contains:

A reclaimed Beech wood top with an FSC certified Beechwood stick attached to a sustainable, vegan-friendly cork ‘string.’

An ethically made organic cotton, drawstring bag hand printed with the Love HeartWood logo.

CE safety certified for ages 3+. Warning: Due to the long cord which poses a danger of strangulation this toy is recommended for ages 3+. Do not allow young children to play unsupervised.

Measurements: Top measures approx. 7 x 5 cm. The stick is 36cm long with an attached cord approx. 45 cm long.

Love HeartWood was a finalist in The Be The Change Awards and The Blue Patch Awards of 2019.

Please note: Wood is a beautiful, natural material and individual pieces vary in colour and markings. This is what gives each piece its unique character so your top will not be exactly the same as the one shown.

“My toys help children connect with Nature through playing with wood that looks and feels like natural wood. I don’t spray or coat my toys in chemical based paints or acrylic laquers.  I make a range of traditional and original toys that allow children to develop their curiosity and imagination. As a parent, I believe that’s the best gift we can give to our kids.”
